Get this wrong and you either overspend on a unit that's bigger than your house needs, or you buy one that trips and stalls the first time the well pump and the furnace kick on together. Here's how I think through it.

What does "whole-house" actually mean for your home?

"Whole-house" gets thrown around loosely. For some folks it means every circuit runs like nothing happened. For others it means the essentials: heat, fridge, well pump, a few outlets, and enough lighting to move around safely.

The difference between those two changes the size of the unit and the cost of the install. A true whole-house setup usually pairs a larger standby generator with an automatic transfer switch that manages the loads. A smaller essentials setup can run off a more modest unit with a subpanel feeding just the circuits that matter.

Neither one is wrong. It depends on how you live and what you're willing to spend. I'll lay out both when I'm at your house so you can see the tradeoff.

What drives the size you need?

The number that matters is your peak load, meaning the most power your house draws at once, including the surge when motors start up. A well pump, a furnace blower, and a central AC compressor all pull a big spike the instant they turn on.

Here's what I look at when I'm sizing a whole house generator in Taunton MA:

  • Heat. Around here that's the big one. If you've got a gas or oil furnace, the blower motor and controls need power. Electric heat is a much heavier load and changes the math fast.
  • Well and septic pumps. Plenty of homes outside downtown Taunton, out toward the Raynham and Bridgewater lines, run on private wells. No power means no water, so the pump usually makes the must-run list.
