If your house was built before the modern era of wiring, there's a real chance some knob-and-tube is still hiding in it. The short answer is that it isn't automatically a crisis, but it does need a set of trained eyes before you load it up with modern demand. Here's what I actually look for when I get called out to an older place around Bridgewater.

What is knob-and-tube wiring, and why does it still turn up here?

Knob-and-tube is an early wiring method. You've got ceramic knobs holding the wire away from the framing and ceramic tubes protecting the wire where it passes through joists and studs. The hot and neutral run as two separate conductors instead of bundled together in a cable.

Bridgewater has a lot of homes that predate the wiring most people picture. Walk through the older neighborhoods near the center of town, or out toward the streets around Bridgewater State, and you'll find houses that have been added onto and rewired in pieces over the decades. That's usually where I find it: a section that never got touched while the rest of the house moved on.

The wiring itself isn't always the problem. The problem is what's happened to it since, and what people have asked it to do that it was never built for.

What do I actually look for on site?

When I'm troubleshooting an older home, knob-and-tube is one of the first things I rule in or out. Here's what I'm checking.

  • The insulation on the conductors. The original insulation gets brittle with age and heat. Where it's cracking or flaking off, that's exposed conductor, and that's a real concern.
  • Splices and junctions. Older splices were sometimes done open, twisted and taped, or buried in a wall without a box. I'm looking for anything that isn't in a proper enclosure.
  • Contact with building insulation. Knob-and-tube was designed to shed heat into open air. When someone later blows insulation into an attic or wall over top of it, that heat has nowhere to go.
  • Signs of overload. Warm cover plates, scorching, a smell around a fixture, breakers or fuses that trip. That tells me the circuit is being pushed harder than it was ever meant to handle.
  • Additions tied into old wiring. A modern kitchen or bath circuit spliced onto a century-old run is a mismatch I see more than you'd think.

I also want to know how much of the house is still on it. Sometimes it's one forgotten circuit in a back bedroom. Sometimes it's more than the owner realized.

Is knob-and-tube wiring in Bridgewater dangerous on its own?

Not automatically. Wiring that's intact, in open air, and not overloaded can be in decent shape. What changes the picture is age, modification, and demand.

Two things stack up against it here. First, the additions and modernizations older homes have gone through, where new load got hung off old wire. Second, our winters. When it gets cold in southeastern Massachusetts, insulation gets added, space heaters come out, and the electrical system gets asked for more than it usually handles. That's when the weak points show themselves.
