Most flickering comes down to one of three things: a loose bulb, a loose connection somewhere in the circuit, or something bigger at your panel or utility feed. The trick is figuring out which one you've got before it turns into a bigger problem. Here's how I sort it out.
Is it one light or the whole house?
This is the first question I ask, and you can answer it before I even show up.
If a single fixture flickers, the problem is usually local to that fixture. Loose bulb, a bad socket, a dimmer that doesn't play nice with LED bulbs, or a loose wire behind the switch or in the fixture box. These are usually the easier fixes.
If lights flicker across multiple rooms at once, or the whole house dims when the fridge or furnace kicks on, that points to something upstream. Now we're talking about the panel, a main connection, or the service coming in from the street. That's the kind of flicker I don't want you ignoring.
What I check first on a service call
When I walk in for flickering lights in Taunton MA, I don't start by pulling the panel apart. I start simple and work my way up, because the cheap fixes are also the most common.
- I check the bulbs and confirm they're rated for the fixture and dimmer they're in. LED and older dimmers are a frequent culprit.
